Do you feel upset to see dark patches on your skin? Everyone wishes to have spotless skin free from all blemishes. Damage to the skin can be caused by many external factors such as the use of creams, sunlight, multiple laser therapies, and many more. People are unaware of the harmful effects of sun rays when they go out. They do not use sunblock which enhances the risk of many skin problems. Actinic keratosis is also caused by continuous exposure to the sun which causes patches on the skin. Come and know Actinic Keratosis: Treatment Options in Dubai, Abu Dhabi & Sharjah and get rid of it.
What is It?
It is a type of skin condition in which scaly patches are formed on the skin. This is not the disease but consider a pre-cancerous condition of the skin. The majority of people do not develop skin cancer but if it gets worse then you may get squamous skin carcinoma. People with this skin condition claim to have rough dark patches on the skin that are painful and cause itching on the skin.
What are its Causes?
The most common cause of actinic keratosis is continuous exposure to sunlight. Sun rays contain harmful ultraviolet rays that destroy the skin layers and their cells. If you do not use sun block these UV rays penetrate through layers and damage the skin producing cells such as keratinocytes. It is the most common cause of this skin condition.
Symptoms:
When you are prone to these skin conditions you will notice some changes. the signs and symptoms that individuals observe are:
- Small blisters or bumps are formed on the skin that changes color with time.
- Bleeding
- Skin itching, dryness, and stinging
- Scaly lips with visible patches.
- Pain or tenderness
How it can be Treated?
Actinic keratosis does not develop skin cancer in the majority of people. But if it gets worse there are many treatment options that can effectively treat it.
Chemical Peels:
It is actually a face mask that contains all skin-friendly chemicals for the breakdown of actinic keratosis. The chemical peel is applied to your face in the office. This peel will shatter all the patches on the skin and stimulate the growth of new healthy skin. You will notice redness and bruising for a couple of days but that will subside once your skin gets healed. All the chemicals are absorbed in the skin which fastens the growth of new skin.
Excision:
Another method to remove AK is excision. Your healthcare provider will make an incision and remove all the dirt and waste from the skin. After the incisions, the skin is stitched back so that it may heal.
Cryotherapy:
It is the most advanced treatment option that uses cold liquid nitrogen to cold the skin growths. Once the skin is frozen small blisters are formed. These blisters can easily be peeled off removing all the AK substances.
Photodynamic Therapy:
This therapy is also done for the same purpose. It uses photochemical light and creams to remove the dry patches on the skin. After you are done with this therapy it is strictly suggested to avoid sun exposure until your skin gets healed.
What to Expect?
You will notice redness, pain, bruising, and inflammation at the treated site. The texture of the skin changes and you may develop scars on the skin that can cause infection. These all side effects will subside once you recover and your skin gets intact.
Aftercare:
Your skin specialist will give you some aftercare measures to follow. Some general precautionary measures are
- You should avoid direct exposure to the sun and its harmful UV rays.
- You should use sunblock or sunscreen when you go out.
- Do not touch your skin as it might cause infection.
- You should increase the intake of water for more good results.
- Do not apply any harsh and irritating ointments on the skin.
- You should visit your doctor at least once a year.
Results and Recovery:
It usually takes 10 -14 days to recover completely from AK.however in some people these lesions do not respond well and more than one session is required. This session is done after 8 weeks after the first session.
How Long does it Take to Go Away?
The time period primarily depends upon the size and type of actinic keratosis. It mostly takes three and a half months. to completely go away after the treatment. This skin condition can develop again if you expose your skin to the sun. It is advised to see your healthcare provider once or twice a year to get rid of future complications.
